Engine Technology

At Bell, whole-life costs and maximum operational productivity for our customers have always been at the very top of our agenda. So when it comes to choosing the right engine technology, whether it be for our ADTs or our wheeled loaders, we first look at what environments those machines operate in and what tasks they perform.

As a result of this approach – one where our customers’ needs determine our manufacturing decisions – Bell has opted for differing engine technologies for both ADTs and wheeled loaders.

Test results have shown us that the best route to achieving new emissions regulations with our ADTs is through SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. Through this system, which uses a water-based urea solution additive called AdBlue to treat exhaust gases before they enter the atmosphere, our tests have shown around a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency on the trucks and improved engine performance.

Bell has taken an alternative approach to the engine technology on its range of wheeled loaders due to the different tasks they perform. In this case we have opted for EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) technology, which involves cooling part of the exhaust gas before reintroducing it into the engine with the intake air in order to obtain a lower combustion temperature, thus reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.

It would have been easy for us to have decided upon just one of the above technologies and incorporated it into all machines. But we never take the easy option at Bell if it means we can provide the best individual solutions for our customers.
