The Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (MEMSA) 2026 #MindShift Conference in Sandton, Gauteng, explored the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, localisation, sustainability and workforce transformation. The overriding theme throughout the event was that innovation is no longer optional.
Product innovation for future-readiness
At the Mining and Excellence Awards, which formed part of the conference, it was therefore significant that Bell Equipment was presented with the Innovation in Surface Mining Award for the advanced Bell Motor Grader platform.
Expressing his delight that the grader’s innovation had been recognised, Bell Product Manager Jeremiah Mokhomo said: “This product is designed and built for enhanced operational efficiency, improved safety, and reduced environmental impact. That it has been recognised for achieving the objectives of enabling smarter, more sustainable surface mining while maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global landscape is highly rewarding for our team.
“Being technology agnostic, we purposefully engineered the grader with a future-ready platform, featuring a Collision Prevention System (CPS)-ready architecture and retrofittable grading technology, enabling seamless integration with third-party precision grading and machine control systems. This flexibility allows customers to upgrade capabilities as operational needs evolve, without requiring major machine modifications.”
He added that the grader’s sealed slew bearing, a premium feature that protects critical components from contamination, is at the core of the machine’s durability. This significantly extends service life and reduces maintenance requirements by eliminating the need for circle wear inserts.
Developing skills and keeping employees safe
Bell also took home the Future Workforce Builders Award, which recognises the company’s investment in training, mentorship, transformation, and talent pipelines while aligning skills development with industry.
Bell Equipment’s skills development efforts were highlighted again by the Durban Automotive Cluster, which presented the company with the Skills Development Excellence Award.
Lastly, the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) Prevention Programme Awards event was held at the Sandton Convention Centre at the end of the month to honour the individuals, teams and organisations that have made outstanding commitments to zero-harm and workplace safety.
Over 100 companies across 500 sites in the metal and manufacturing industry participated, and Bell won two categories – the Best Prevention Choice Award and Best Prevention Team Award.
Bell Group Risk and Safety Manager, Nico Grobbelaar, said receiving this recognition is a “proud moment” and “validates the immense effort our teams put into safety every day”.
“Working with RMA’s auditing team has helped us refine our processes and foster a proactive safety culture. These awards aren’t just trophies; it represents our commitment to ensuring that every employee returns home safe.”
He thanked the Bell Safety Teams for building a safety culture and the employees for looking out for each other and prioritising their well-being and that of their co-workers. “Achieving this award proves that accidents are preventable when we act as a team. Be proud of this achievement, but let’s not become complacent. Let’s take this momentum forward to the next milestone. Thank you for your dedication, and let’s keep working safely!”
